THE PROJECT:

The Nature Odessy Magazine (or IOP Magazine) is a collaborative effort of the entire 7th grade body of students at Warren-Walker Middle School.  Each student researches and creates their own 2 page magazine lay-out while in Computer Applications with Mrs. Graham.  Once finished, it is then added to the online Magazine Gallery to display their work, knowledge and skill.

THE PURPOSE:

The Invertebrate Odyssey Project is an integrated unit that spans the entire seventh grade year at Warren-Walker Middle School.  This project is created and developed in several academic areas, including:  English, Science, Computer Applications, Math, and Industrial Arts.  This integrated unit combines multiple academic disciplines to create a well-rounded understanding on the invertebrate topic. Over the course of this study, students learn a variety of skills and practice hands-on application with content that is based on their specific invertebrate interest which encourages a higher level of understanding, performance, mastery, and engagement.

THE PROCESS:

Student research is gathered and studied in Science.  The research content is then compiled, written, and edited in English to create an autobiographical article for Warren-Walker's Nature Odyssey Magazine.    This article is designed to showcase the invertebrate of the student's choosing.  Once written, the article is transferred to a Publisher Page layout and is customized by the student during Computer Applications using visual aids and graphic design tools.  The students gather specific scientific information about the invertebrate's proportions and create highly detailed scale drawings in Math.  When the scale drawing is completed in Math, it is then used as a blueprint for the Industrial Arts welding assignment.  The culmination of these final projects are displayed at the school's annual ARTZ NIGHT.
